So this band just Squeezed on to my list. Squeeze.

I don't like most of their music. I think sometimes you have to "be there" with certain bands or artists, and I wasn't. It always feels like they are trying too hard. I think they often feel like they are perhaps pretending to be something they are not.

But I don't doubt their influence. They were once hailed as the "heirs to Lennon and McCartney's throne" and basically laid the groundwork for Britpop. Guitar legends like Blur's Graham Coxon idolised them, and massive stadium acts like U2, R.E.M., and Dire Straits actually got their start opening for Squeeze back in the day.

Also Jools Holland was part of the original line-up.

But "Take Me I'm Yours" is one of my favourite songs.

They made it around the time they were working with John Cale. BUT although Cale produced most of their debut album, the record label thought his recording of "Take Me I'm Yours" was completely uncommercial. So, the band scrapped it and ended up producing the hit version of the track entirely by themselves. Which you have got to give them huge credit for.

What I love about the song is how entirely different it feels from their usual pub-rock pop. It has a synth hook. It's gritty, cynical and effortless in a way that their other tracks sometimes miss.
