Quite an unusual one for today.

I am including a remix, which is something I have purposely avoided for most of my selections.

I’m not against remixing, but I’ve always thought it’s a bit like squirting ketchup on a decent restaurant meal. Yes, it tastes nice... but did you really do the heavy lifting? Maybe.

But today, I’m making an exception for Pilooski (the moniker of French DJ and producer Cédric Marszewski). The song I am including is his version of "Beggin'" by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.

I initially tried to include the Frankie Valli original, but he was competing in a key musical era for me. I hate to say it, but his music just feels a bit behind the times for that period. When you had The Velvet Underground and Captain Beefheart releasing music, Valli just didn't quite cut it for me!

What changes things here is the simple, one-note repetition of the guitar hook. Pilooski’s version gives me something to latch onto. It has a slightly harder, pacier edge to it. By providing that drive, it means I can finally just enjoy the vocals, which, ultimately, is exactly what Valli brings to the table.
