I caught Man/Woman/Chainsaw live at MOTH the end of 2023, and I am writing this just before the release of their debut album, Cannonball.

Man/Woman/Chainsaw are a six-piece art-punk collective from London., they have a highly collaborative, orchestral approach to their songwriting, allowing them to cram elements of avant-garde noise, punk, and classical instrumentation into a single track.

I hadn't seen a band before be able to create a pop song, absolutely destroy it, and then build it back up again within the same song. I think they are able to do this because they have grown up together and genuinely appreciate and play to all the distinct strengths within the band.

They are a truly brilliant live act. I think inevitably, the songs they have been putting out to promote the album lean slightly more into their pop tendencies. These tracks are brilliant in their own right, but to truly appreciate them, you need to see how they blend it all together on stage.

For the archive, I have gone with "The Boss" and "What Lucy Found There." When I first heard "What Lucy Found There," I was thinking they were leaning more toward a Black Country, New Road style. However, I think they are a more cohesive band and collectively know exactly where they want to go.

Their music is equally chaotic and reassuring. It's like you know your breaks have failed but it didn't matter because you were driving a marshmallow.
