Liars

They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top has still got to be one of the greatest album titles of all time.

It was by Liars, I am not sure about their propensity for the truth but they were an amazing band.

Formed in Brooklyn at the turn of the millennium but fronted by Australian lead singer Angus Andrew, they were a vital band of that era. They were part of a set of bands to bring post punk back but mix it with electronic production to create a dance punk sound. Which was a much needed antidote to the polished sounds of the late 90's.

My first pick for the archive is the equally brilliantly named "Mr You're On Fire Mr".

Nine years later, and my second pick is "Scissor", a completely different beast of a track and the opener to their 2010 album, Sisterworld.

A year after that release, I saw them play an unbelievable set at the "I'll Be Your Mirror" festival at London's Alexandra Palace. Curated by Portishead and put together by All Tomorrow's Parties, it was a legendary gig. ATP might have eventually gone bust amid accusations of profiteering, but the line-ups they pulled together were outstanding. I'll likely keep referring back to that festival on this blog, but Liars were absolutely a highlight of the weekend!
