So, I set an "Elbow rule" and how if a track is soundtracking a shopping trip, I won't put it on the list.
Well, it doesn't apply all the time.
I included "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)". Yes, it is played absolutely everywhere. Yes, it will follow me around for the rest of my life. But I don't get bored of it. It's catchy. I try and avoid it. It's in.
Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics
But the main reason I am writing about them today is because of "Never Gonna Cry Again".
Never Gonna Cry Again by Eurythmics
I caught this on a clip from The Old Grey Whistle Test. It was right at the beginning of their career, after The Tourists had split.
It's got a hypnotic, almost Krautrocky feel. Then Annie Lennox whips out a flute.
It's a slightly fragile tune from two people trying something different. Who kept trying to do things different.
So I reserve the right to break my own supermarket rules, especially if you have a flute. Flutes rule.
